A chance to play a leading role in major investment decisions across a wide variety of programmes is on offer at Camden Council. The London borough is hunting for a new deputy director of finance to help drive the authority forward as it moves into new ways of working and uncharted areas of activity. The role is far removed from traditional finance posts, reflecting the need to bring finance expertise into every corner of the council's work. Camden will have seen its government grant halved by 2017/18 and this has become the catalyst for change across the organisation. 'We are trying to not let the reduced budget become a negative, reactive thing but to use it as an opportunity to transform the organisation and to do things differently,' explains finance director Mike O'Donnell. The person who takes on this post will be a key leader in that. It's very much about stepping out of the narrow finance box and working with colleagues across the organisation.'
