Central government has no control over the use of compromise agreements - financial inducements offered to staff when quitting their posts - spending watchdogs have reported. A National Audit Office (NAO) study into confidentiality clauses and special severance payments issued 21 June highlights a lack of central or coordinated controls over how the civil service and the wider public sector make use of the devices - commonly dubbed 'gagging clauses'.
