Think tank tackles barriers to housing for the elderly

Think tanks from opposite ends of the political spectrum have been asked to engage in a war of ideas over the best way to house the country's ageing population.Commissioned by housing provider Hanover to mark its 50th anniversary, rivals Policy Exchange and the Fabian Society found common cause in the belief inter-generational unfairness had arisen from home-ownership being concentrated among older people.The Fabian Society's solution is to introduce a property tax in a bid to lower house prices - part of a 'grand bargain' review of taxation and social security spending that would see more prosperous older people pay more in tax and receive less.
