The integration of health and social care is rightly top of the local government agenda. Much of the narrative has been dominated by the funding pressures being placed on upper-tier and unitary authorities. An aging population, combined with continuing reductions in local government funding, has made the refocusing of health and social care services around integration and prevention an imperative for the public sector. In achieving the long heralded reinvention of health and social care services, we shouldn't lose sight of the contribution of district councils and their vital provision of Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs). For those less familiar with the service, DFGs are an essential frontline preventive service, with districts providing housing adaptions such as stair-lifts, bathing facilities and more suitable access arrangements.
