Making allowances

Cllr Gordon Keymer was uncharacteristically critical in his comments about South East Employers' workshop on members' allowances. (Letters, The MJ, 3 May). Cllr Keymer is right that allowances are not top of today's priority list. Like Tandridge DC, my council has also frozen allowances, in our case since 2008. We created an independent remuneration panel four years before the law required it.
