London Councils estimates that by 2015/16, there will need to be an additional 90,000 primary school places to ensure that the capital's children are able to attend school. And, while particularly acute in London, this challenge is something which is exercising town halls and breakfast tables alike, the length and breadth of the country. As a former local government chief executive, and having overseen one of the largest schools-building programmes since the Victorian Age, this is an issue that I am well fa-rniliarwith. Simply filling our classrooms to 'bulging' point, is not the answer. Which is why I am delighted that my organisation is engaging with so many local authorities exploring ways in which to tackle this challenge in new and innovative ways. The most recent programme is with En-field LBC, where we will be working in partnership to create 2400 new primary school places delivered across 11 primary schools in the borough.
