After some 30 years of checking councils' books, the Audit Commission is being scrapped and weeks after the announcement I can still hear the cries of delight emanating from council finance departments around the country.I don't think there are many staff working in local government finance who don't have sympathy with Eric Pickles' view that the Audit Commission had lost its way and the inspection regime had become cumbersome.
