Paul Lankester's 'District view' column (The MJ, 12 May) questioned the approach the Electoral Commission took to 5 May's elections and referendum. As Mr Lankester acknowledges, 2010 saw voters being let down and losing their vote due to failures of electoral administration, and the commission introduced measures to try to ensure there would be no repeat of that. For the referendum, the chief counting officer had to oversee 440 diverse counting areas based on local authorities in England, and constituency boundaries in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
