Private sector security firms could shortly rent custody cells to UK police authorities under plans to save tens of millions of pounds each year.G4S, a private security firm, last week announced a plan to make purpose-built, out-of-town custody suites available to police forces had been approved by the Home Office.G4S said it was already in advanced negotiations with a medium-sized police force, which could see the force lease new custody facilities staffed mostly by the firm's employees - and which could save the force £77m over four years.
