One of the smallest counties in the country has given its residents one of the most brain-twisting local government headaches of all time. Prepare to be mind-bogglingly befuddled. In 1997, Luton BC became a unitary authority, which meant it was technically no longer in Bedfordshire but in, well, Luton. Now Bedford town is to become a unitary authority as well, and what is left of the county will become Central Bedfordshire, despite not being central. Staff at the new Central Bedfordshire Council are likely to share Bedfordshire County Hall in Bedford, which is now in the new unitary authority of Bedford and, therefore, not a part of Bedfordshire.
