Recent significant departures from councils in Tower Hamlets and Wakefield have caused controversy when details have been leaked of alleged payouts of around £500,000.This has led to communities secretary, John Denham, asking the Audit Commission to investigate and decide whethermore robust procedures are necessary to protect the public purse.Pending any such guidance, there are a few sensible steps for public bodies to take to protect both their finances and their reputation.
