A unitary plan for Suffolk

Occupying a largely agricultural, low-lying county, the good people of Suffolk have a long history of defending their shores against coastal erosion. Now though, the most immediate threat to the county boundaries lies not in the pounding of waves from the North Sea, but in the 80 pages of fine detail, maps and figures contained in the Draft proposals for unitary local government in Norfolk and Suffolk, published by the Boundary Committee for England on 7 July. The proposals outline plans to sweep away Suffolk CC and the seven district councils of Babergh, Forest Heath, Ipswich, Mid Suffolk, St Edmundsbury, Suffolk Coastal and Waveney which have served the county's 670,000 residents since the last major reoganisation established the existing two-tier system in the wake of the 1972 Local Government Act.
