Town halls join fraud fight

Town hall finance departments will be asked to provide detailed assessments of local fraud estimates, under Audit Commission plans to tackle the illegal use of public money. The commission has asked 500 public bodies - including councils and police, fire and probation services - for information on fraud and error, so that improvements to systems designed to prevent both can be implemented.
