Local government employers and tradeunions were this week mired in a stand-offover pay.The National Employers have called onthe unions to accept their improved 2.75%pay offer, which they insisted was ‘final’.Employers recognise that staff have gonethe extra mile but have argued that councilscannot afford a better offer – which wouldincrease the national pay bill by more than£500m – after their finances were hit bycoronavirus. They have made the same payoffer to chief executives.
