Centuries old Census faces the axe by ONS

Council chiefs hope local government could benefit from a fairer funding settlement under coalition proposals to change how population data is collected. The reaction follows news that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) is consulting on an overhaul of the ten-yearly national Census - which has been in operation for more than two centuries in England and Wales. Two options are being considered by government statisticians. The first choice is for an online, modernised census to be undertaken every ten years, but at far less expense than the 2011 exercise.
