Two more counties face emergency savings

Two more councils have announced emergency savings plans as counties struggle to balance their books. Suffolk and Somerset CCs this week both announced revisions to their finances forced upon them by the soaring cost of children's services - but they have already been warned they could face legal challenges. Senior Somerset councillors will meet next week to vote on proposals for another £28m of savings by 2020. Members at the Conservative-controlled authority have also been asked to support plans to force staff and councillors to undertake two days of work unpaid by 2020 - designed to save £1m.
