Failure to reform the business rates appeal system could result in councils being unable to fund vital services, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned. The warning, which comes as the LGA publishes its submission to the Government's business rates review, follows a deluge of appeals cases after a 1 April deadline was fixed for backdated appeals over the 2010 deadline. Smith Square also called for councils to be allowed to retain the total share of £23bn annual business rates income gleaned from the 1.8m liable properties.
