The Role Of The Idea Healthy Communities Programme

Recent years have seen a growing acceptance and appreciation of local government's role in improving public health and reducing health inequalities. Councils have shown a renewed commitment to the agenda and a clear understanding of their local leadership role. Last summer, the Healthy Communities Programme (HCP) commissioned a survey of local authority chief executives and senior staff which provided evidence of this commitment. Most respondents said health improvement was a core function of their council. And while many acknowledged that there was pressure on resources, most expected that the priority given to health improvement would increase over the next few years.
