We asked the LGA'sfour political group leaders: 'What might a council of the future look like, and how would that improve people's lives locally?' It's clear the Government wants councils to develop a new role of similar ambition as a leader of communities and champion of local people. And we in local government share that aim. With effective leadership and increased responsibility, local government could undergo a renaissance. An increased role for local government in providing a wider range of services to local people would certainly create a motor for greater professionalism and democratic involvement. And by involving local people in a meaningful way in decision-making, there is also a real opportunity to change the way people view their council.
