Small city, big impact

Beyond 2005 is Cardiff Council's blueprint for the future as it addresses three interlinked issues: its responsibilities as the capital of Wales; its position as a core UK city; and the role it can play for the communities it serves, its region, Britain and Europe. A tall order, maybe, but not a new one. 'We have been re-inventing ourselves over the past decade,' says chief executive Byron Davies. 'We are creating a city fit for a capital of a country.' This task has been undertaken against the background of decline in traditional industries -coal and steel and the authority is now preparing itself for the next phase of its transformation, triggered by the celebration of its centenary as a city and its 50th anniversary as capital of Wales.
