New powers to crack down on people responsible for alcohol-related crime and antisocial behaviour came into force on 1 September.Police authorities and councils can now apply for drinking banning orders on individuals aged 16 and over who regularly commit offences while drunk. The orders, dubbed 'booze ASBOs' also allow magistrates to impose any condition they think is necessary to protect the public from offences. This could include banning people from pubs, bars and off licences.
