Spending watchdogs want the Cabinet Office to clarify the future of departmental capability reviews (DCRs), amid concerns that Whitehall could ditch the assessments. The National Audit Office has reported 'a lack of clarity about where the [DCR] programme is going after the second set of reviews'. The Cabinet Office this week confirmed the DCR process would be put on hold for at least two years while Cabinet secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnefl, and his team considered its role. Whitehall commentators are concerned that senior officials, and ministers, may lose interest in the assessments as new service requirements are heaped on to public bodies.
