The Audit Commission has announced plans to save councils and other public sector bodies almost ￡25m by cutting auditing fees and rebates, and waiving inspection charges. The inspection organisation, which will be scrapped by 2012, is proposing to cut audit fees by 20% for 2011/12, in a bid to save its customers ￡11.8m. It will also be waiving inspection charges and inspection fees for the current year, worth a total of ￡12.8m. "The commission wants a simplified approach that will deliver dear and transparent savings to the bodies it audits and inspects,' said commission chairman, Michael O'Higgins. 'For 2011/12, it will take each audited body's 2010/11 fee and reduce it by the proposed cuts.
