The right-to-buy proposals released by the Government last week have rung serious alarm bells in Harrow. Any move which means a significant reduction in council homes could have a detrimental affect on our borough, and create an even greater housing shortage for the future. We already have a small housing stock, and a growing number of residents who need our support to find suitable accommodation. We are working hard to bridge the gap between supply and demand by looking to the private rented sector with our tenant matching service, Help2let. However, if residents were to take up the option to buy their council homes in any great number, we would be faced with a severe shortage, especially if we are not able to provide the replacement homes locally.
