Charities have welcomed ministers' U-turn over their plan to scrap mobility payments for disabled people living in residential care. Disability minister, Maria Miller, confirmed last week that disabled people in residential care would be able to keep claiming the mobility component of the disability living allowance (DLA) and the personal independence payment (PIP), after months of pressure from third sector groups. The Government had said it would scrap mobility payments worth up to £51 a week from October 2012, as part of plans to save /160m. 'The reasoning behind the original decision was to ensure there were no overlaps in funding, leading to double payments,' Ms Miller said.
