Critics of NHS reform warn of high risk to health service

Campaigners have renewed their warnings about NHS reforms as MPs begin to debate the controversial Health and Social Care Bill again. The British Medical Association (BMA) wrote to all MPs last week in the build up to the third reading of the Bill, which began in the House of Commons on Tuesday (6 September). The BMA chairman, Dr Hamish Meldrum, said the plans posed 'an unacceptably high risk' to the NHS and called on the Government to withdraw the Bill or at least make substantial changes. Dr Meldrum said there was still 'an inappropriate and misguided' reliance on market forces and too little thought has been given to the consequences of some proposals.
