Joint initiative to target illegal immigrant fraud

The UK Border Agency will share information in 'real time' with the Audit Commission's National Fraud Initiative (NFI), as part of a joined-up approach to combating fraudulent credit applications by illegal immigrants. Giving banks and credit agencies ready access to check the immigration status of applicants represents the first phase in a planned expansion of the NFI service which the commission claims has identified £750m in fraud and overpayments since 1996.
