Role of residential care must change to better serve ageing population

Former care minister Paul Burstow has called for the role of residential care in the social care system to be re-appraised to help meet the challenges of an ageing population. Speaking at the think-tank Demos on 22 July, the Liberal Democrat MP commented that many still think of residential care as 'an unwelcome last resort', fuelled by negative reporting in the media. Mr Burstow said the care system will have to change to 'meet the expectations of the baby boomers' and announced the launch of the Commission on Residential Care, which he himself will chair.
