£115m used to 'prop up' services for elderly

Councils have spent /115 m allocated by the Government to improve elderly care to prop up existing services, according to a new report. According to the study by consultant MHP Health Mandate, almost half of all commissioners are using the extra funding from the Department of Health to maintain eligibility criteria. The report found that both Sheffield and Manchester city councils had spent all of their additional funding - more than /15m - on plugging gaps in existing services. It also warned of a growing gap between the best and the worst services, with one in five people able to access homecare in some areas - and one in 25 in others.
