Survey finds 'locals know best' about improving communities

A poll commissioned by the Big Lottery Fund (BLF) suggests 74% of people think local residents or voluntary groups know best when it comes to improving their communities. According to the YouGov poll, just 10% of people believe their local authority knows best, and just 3% trust their MP to make key decisions. The poll was published by the BLF as it announced 50 communities would each be given £1m to improve their areas, as part of the Big Local project. Under the scheme, residents, local firms, charities and public sector groups will come together to decide how the money will be spent. Instead of simply allocating grants, they will be encouraged to look at more sustainable ways of investing in the community, including social enterprises.
