In your recent comment column (Comment, The MJ, 31 October), you stated that Great Britain is shifting 'from the expensive system of registering voters'. Registering each individual is likely to be more expensive than registering households, if only because the costs of the annual canvass will be higher. The matching processes that will have to be followed also involve work that is not presently undertaken. When introduced in 2012, the explanatory memorandum to the Electoral Registration and Administration Bill suggested annual costs would be £13m higher, although it also noted that costs might be reduced if the power to remove the requirement for the annual canvass was exercised.
