Councils clamp down on SPD claimants

Six councils are joining forces in an attempt to clamp down on people wrongly claiming a discount on their tax bills. East Sussex CC, Lewes DC, Wealden DC, Rother DC, Hastings BC and Eastbourne BC have appointed Northgate Information Solutions to find out who is illegally claiming the single person discount (SPD), which entitles claimants to a 25% reduction in their council tax. The council partnership said the comprehensive review would help save money by removing the need for individual surveys.
