The absence of a left wing opposition

As we approach the local elections we may cast our minds back to the 1980s and another unpopular Conservative-led government when left-wing opposition to Thatcher crystallised around councils. There is little chance of that happening in 2013. For one of the puzzles about current politics is the absence of a serious left wing opposition. UK1P is looming up on the right as a threat to the Cameron Conservatives but there is little evidence of an equivalent force appearing on the left.
