The system has a left part (6) comprising a wing (8) extending a crosspiece (7) towards the front. The wing forms a lateral edge of a backrest, where the lateral edge projects towards the front with respect to a central part of the backrest. The wing has an inflatable safety cushion (10) inflated between the wing and a left door (P) of a vehicle. The cushion protects an occupant during his lateral displacement towards the exterior. The wing is maintained on the crosspiece by a fixed stop (11). The wing is detached from the crosspiece, when the wing is not maintained by a lock.
