摘要

At the end of last week, national and local newspapers alike were awash with the traditional August A-level results stories. But, while images of young people celebrating their scholastic achievements as the starting point to academic study and tuition fees filled the pages, the life opportunities of thousands of their contemporaries remain starkly different. Youth unemployment has long been a policy concern at national and local level because of the scarring effects on the life chances of young people - who are more likely to realise lower future earnings and face more time out of work - and the wider economy. Two reports published by think-tanks, the Institute for Public Policy Research and the Centre for Cities, investigated the transition from school-to-work and how local authorities can best tackle youth unemployment in their areas.
