The comprehensive and highly critical report into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham made tough reading for all of us involved in child protection. Here, laid out in forensic detail, were institutional and individual failings on a large scale that led to 1,400 young people becoming victims. The publication of the report feels like a watershed moment and has rightly focused attention on the work being done to protect children and young people from such criminal activity. In Wigan, tackling child sexual exploitation is one of my responsibilities, and since the Rotherham report was published I have fielded questions from councillors, journalists and senior officers from other organisations asking if we are doing all we can to make sure none of the mistakes made in Rotherham are happening here.
