'Turn our areas into unitaries' MPs demand

Two MPs from opposite ends of the country have called for the local authorities in their area to be turned into unitaries.The former culture secretary and Exeter MP, Ben Bradshaw, has reignited the unitary debate in the South West after claiming the city council would be better off running its own affairs.Exeter City Council did mount a failed attempt at unitary status in the last round of local government reorganisation in 2009, but Mr Bradshaw said the city was being let down by the county council by failing to tackle weeds in local parks and verges.
