It seems that everyone has an opinion these days about how to run a council, including Shipley MP Philip Davies, who thinks they should be more like supermarkets. Speaking in the House of Commons last week, Mr Davies, who used to work for ASDA, said he was shocked at the staffing structure at Bradford MBC. 'When I worked for Asda, there were something like eight or nine levels between the most junior role and the chief executive,' he told fellow MPs. 'Does the leader of the House agree that an awful lot of money could be saved by cutting out some of those job levels and that this would also create a much-needed career path for people, who could start at the bottom and follow a path to reach the top? That often happens in supermarkets, but it very seldom happens in local authorities.'
