Things in Rotherham have become relatively quiet, for an authority which has been the centre of attention for the government and media in recent years. Following the independent review into child sexual exploitation by Alexis Jay, which reported more than a year ago, and the further investigations into Rotherham's failures by Louise Casey, the Government intervened in the authority. In February last year, the then secretary of state for communities and local government, Eric Pickles, sent in a team of high profile commissioners to turn Rotherham around. In September this year, the council and its commissioners launched a campaign to attract a new top team at the,, council, including a chief executive, a strategic director for adult care and housing, an assistant chief executive and a assistant director of legal service - who will also act as the monitoring officer. Now, the recruitment is well underway for all the posts. The council is down to a shortlist of four and due to make an appointment soon. Rotherham commissioner and former bi-borough chief executive Sir Derek Myers is confident the authority will make a good appointment, and progressing in its journey to turn itself around.
