When the towering 6ft 7ins geologist headed off to the South American country in 1993, he had no plans to enter the world of Bolivian politics. But after a few years looking for gold, which he found in the east of the country, he turned his attention to politics. 'El Gringo' (the white man), as he is now known in just about every Bolivian household, settled down on the farm he had bought a few years previously. 'I got involved with the neighbours association and it was decided we needed someone to run for mayor in the next municipal elections,' he explains.
