They call Edinburgh the Athens of the North. A beautiful city with glorious architecture and the capital of a nation with a long and illustrious history. Stand on the ramparts of the castle which dominates the skyline and you can look down on the higgledy-piggledy streets of the old town and over to the splendour of the New Town, one of the first planned city centres of the modern world. It is a breathtaking, historic sight, but Edinburgh is not just about the past. Far from it. Cast your eyes to the west and you can see striking modern architecture blending in with the old - evidence of a booming financial sector and a knowledge-based economy. Edinburgh is thriving - and the City of Edinburgh Council is playing an active part in managing this growth. In 2001, in response to the Scottish Executive's 21st century government initiative, the council entered into a 10-year strategic partnership with BT to deliver large-scale business transformation projects, and provide the council's IT infrastructure and services.
