We are living, as we all know, in fast-moving world, where pressures for change are, if anything, accelerating. And it isn't just the technology we use or the way we transact business. In almost every aspect of our lives, we are constantly facing new challenges. This is inevitably unsettling, and it is an understandable human reaction to seek comfort in old certainties when threatened by forces we don't fully understand or control. Faced with the shock of the industrial revolution and associated economic and political turbulence in the 19th century, generations of European and American artists and writers sought refuge in idealised images of untamed nature or a mythical, gothic past.
