Leadership certainly has taken centre stage with the latest launch of strategies for its future from the ODPM and the LGA. And we at the Local Government Leadership Centre welcome that. Perhaps, predictably, much of the early focus will be on the question of mayors. Some pundits advocate that such a role will revitalise local government, while others see it as a reduction in democracy. Views will not follow any conventional set of divisions. Indeed, I suspect that even within my own small team there will be different views. However, I want to focus on some of the wider issues the debate raises. First, we have both central and local government recognising the importance of leadership, and accepting that good management matters.
