Laptop theft sparks security fears

Glasgow City Council is to write to tens of thousands of customers after a laptop computer containing names, addresses and bank account details was stolen from council offices in May. People potentially affected by the data loss include suppliers and recipients of winter fuel payments and care grants. A council spokesman apologised for the inconvenience caused and reminded concerned residents that council workers would never call at their home, or telephone to ask for personal information such as bank account details.
