It's all change in local government, with a number of chief executive appointments. Don't be too alarmed at the turnover, it's less about a clear-out, and more to do with the recruitment process halting for the summer break. Now councils are clearing the backlog. The local government gossip circuit will focus around Charlie Parker's appointment to Westminster, or the sustainability of the bi-borough chief executive role if Hammersmith and Fulham turns red at the elections. However, I think the real story is in the restructure of Birmingham City Council. Birmingham is not the first to move to a streamlined structure of directorates -nor is it first to pull adults and children's services back together. But in such a large authority this structure creates three enormous roles.
