Salford City Council has committed 'to a tobacco-free future' by signing up to the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control. The declaration, set up by Newcastle City Council, aims to reduce smoking which in Salford is the biggest single cause of preventable deaths under 75. Over half are related to smoking while 26% of the population smoke and smoking costs every taxpayer in the city £58 for each person admitted with related diseases and illnesses.
