Glasgow chief rejects double devolution claim

Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson has hit back at claims from a Scottish Government minister that his council does not support double devolution. Speaking at the Core Cities Summit in Glasgow, Scottish infrastructure and cities secretary, Keith Brown, told The MJ: 'Glasgow is not supporting the [Scottish] Community Empowerment Bill' Despite widespread support for place-led devolution at the summit, Mr Brown was keen to point out that he wanted to see devolution at community level. The SNO minister said: 'Our approach to devolution does not stop at local authority level... we want to help shift the balance of power more towards communities.' Cllr Matheson hit back at the sideswipe against Glasgow and claimed: 'The truth is, Glasgow practices double devolution.' He claimed Mr Brown's speech was 'a single transferable speech' which was more about what the Scottish Government had done than about the agenda of the conference.
