Pledge to invest £1bn a year in mental health services

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has pledged to invest up to £lbn a year in mental health services, after a government report showed that services were not meeting patient needs under the current NHS system. Access to community care 24 hours a day, seven days a week for people experiencing mental health crises will form part of a 'transformation' of NHS mental heath services in England, he said. The recommendations of an independent taskforce which surveyed mental health services is being backed by a pledge by the NHS in England to help more than a million extra people facing mental health problems and to invest in excess of £ 1bn annually by 2020-21.
