The local government finance settlement at the tail end of last year provided little respite to the sector and does not bode well for a happy New Year. As winter pressures focus media minds on struggles within the NHS and care sectors, there is still no solution in sight to the social care 'time bomb' we all predicted for decades. The Government's finance settlement plan to snatch cash from districts to prop-up social care may be well-intended, but Local Government Association figures have revealed it still leaves 57 upper-tier councils worse off.
