The Government has resisted pressure to bring forward a review on business rates appeals to address persistent problems in the system. In a House of Lords debate last week, peers urged the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government's (MHCLG) Lord Bourne to start a promised review earlier than planned to deal with backlogs and glitches in the system. The check, challenge and appeal service, introduced in April 2017, allows businesses to view their valuation details before deciding whether to contest it, but users have faced ongoing system crashes and delays, with more than 10,000 appeals currently 'bogged down' in the Valuation Office Agency. the end of the year.
